What are hearts and what do they perform?

Hearts designate the number of "lives". A certain amount of them assigned for every chapter. After losing a battle you lose one life.
If, for example, you have been repeatedly not able to defeat a boss and spent all your lives, you will have to buy a new one using ether. Each next life will cost more ether.
